If you are a cPTSD survivor, you probably already know how complex and debilitating this type of trauma is. It can leave you absolutely hopeless and sometimes even unable to function in the real world. cPTSD is a result of a prolonged relational trauma - years or decades of it, which sometimes does not end at all (e.g. think of a narcissistic father or mother figure). cPTSD survivors experience an array of different symptoms on all levels of their being - physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.
Here are just some cPTSD symptoms:
Chronic anxiety
Chronic depression
Mood swings
Inability to self-sooth
Addictions
Chronic physical health issues
Social anxiety
Body image issues
A lot of relational trauma hence tendency to self-isolate
Chronic shame
Complex trauma ruins your health on all levels. It is not a problem of the mind, it is a whole body struggle. And, it is not even your problem! Fortunately or unfortunately, it is the problem of the system and the society we live in. So, if you are still thinking that there is something wrong with you - no, my friend, you are not wrong in any way, shape or form. Let's put responsibility for the atrocities you experienced and the impact they created back where they truly belong - the system. Many of us are programmed for suffering from the moment we are born and we cannot do anything about it in childhood. However, we can change things as adults.
You might have tried a lot of things to heal your cPTSD but nothing created a huge positive impact in your life. The truth is, trauma healing is a journey, and every person needs different combination of things and different amount of time to heal. There is no cookie cutter solution that can help here. There is no one practitioner who can help here. Every person needs a tailored approach and a lot of freedom to explore themselves and experiment with different things.
What I think is important when it comes to cPTSD healing and what many practitioners neglect is a whole body or multidimensional approach. I want to share with you a guideline which you can follow to make your cPTSD healing journey less complicated and overwhelming. It will give you a system to refer to and a wider understanding of trauma.
The information I'm going to share with you down below comes from years of my personal research of the topic and my own experience with cPTSD. Feel free to work through each dimension of health with a practitioner or on your own. Since cPTSD is a relational trauma, at some point you will need help of a professional who feels good to your system and is aligned with what kind of support your body/soul needs in each season of your life.
A short multidimensional guide to healing cPTSD
Physical Dimension of Health/ BODY
Trauma lives in the body and impacts the body in a negative way. So, what is important for healing here is to create a strong foundation of healthy lifestyle habits which are going to support your body in the best way possible. As well as working with the body to support it in moving out from difficult nervous system states, releasing difficult emotions and finding safety within. What can help with the latter part is understanding neuroception and vagus nerve health and how all that is connected to trauma and can be used for managing or even healing it.
Hence, it is paramount to address your diet, exercise frequency, sleep patterns, personal hygiene, and stress levels. The better you support your physical body, the better your mental health will get, and the more you will respect and love yourself and your body.
It is also important to address the body's toxic load because toxicity in the body along with parasites negatively affect your mental and emotional health. Everything is interconnected.
Remember to spend lots of time in nature as well because nature is our biggest healer!
Mental Dimension of Health/ THOUGHTS
Thoughts can be a huge struggle for trauma survivors. Forever spiralling intrusive thoughts in your head telling you all the bad things about you or scary pictures in your mind bringing you a lot of distress - this is like an internal prison you do not know how to break out of. It is horrible. However, there is a way out.
First, you need to understand that:
The thoughts you experience in your head are the result of years of negative programming caused by parents/caregivers/relatives/society/system.
Thoughts are not truths.
Not all thoughts are your thoughts (some of them are entities or thoughts of the field/collective).
You can use your thoughts to find solutions instead dwelling on the problems.
Many of your beliefs about yourself and life are cognitive distortions.
Once you understand all that, you need to get acquainted with the term called neuroplasticity (the ability of the brain to form new neural connections throughout life). If your body can learn what trauma is, it can also unlearn the trauma. Look into the work of Dr. Joe Dispenza to understand the science behind it.
Seeing things in a new way, getting out of your small little mind box, learning new information and exploring new things is paramount to get out of your mind prison! This is how you and your body learn new ways of being and interrupt the old negative thought patterns.
Emotional Dimension of Health/ EMOTIONS
Complex trauma feels like everything is triggering, people are dangerous, and you are the worst most disgusting person in the entire world.
So, in this health dimension there is a lot of shame, guilt, unworthiness, people pleasing and other heavy difficult emotions to address and heal. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to do that but to dive deep into your inner world and inner darkness to begin processing and letting go of what does not belong there. If you're lucky enough to be able to afford working with a practitioner, this is where you definitely should get external support. This is probably one of the most important health dimensions to master when it comes to healing cPTSD.
One very beneficial psychotherapeutic modality that can help you to do this work is IFS (Internal Family System). This is the only modality along with SCHH (Soul Center Healing Hypnosis) which created a significant positive impact in me and my life. So, that is the major reason why I recommend it to everyone who just like me has tried everything to heal their cPTSD.
Shadow work is another important component of this work which is partially addressed through IFS but can be addressed even deeper through intentional shadow work.
There is probably nothing as healing for your emotional health as being in the presence of a safe loving human you can be yourself with. Those people will find you. Even if you meet just one person like that, it is such an incredible gift. If not, never give up hope. Your people will find you. Meanwhile, you can always connect to people on a surface level and feel our unified humanness in those interactions.
Energy dimension of Health/ENERGY BODIES/CHAKRAS
This particular health dimension is largely ignored and misunderstood. Science does not yet have an ability to give us all information we need about energy. However, we do know that everything consists of energy (Quantum Physics).
From ancient Indian culture, we also know about chakras and their importance in our health, well-being, and spiritual development. If you pay attention to research mediums do around this topic, you will come across a lot of fascinating material. So, stay open and allow yourself to learn and be humble for that we cannot know everything but we can trust our inner guidance and keep learning through personal experience.
My other article on energetic attachment talk about how entities can impact your mental health and exacerbate your cPTSD symptoms, so check that one out to learn more.
Chakras impact everything within the body and so we need to identify which chakras we came here to master and begin mastering them. If you had a lot of trauma around your root chakra, you will feel very unsafe in the world, terrified, scared, anxious, ungrounded, and experience scarcity. If you have a lot of trauma around your throat chakra, it will be hard for you to speak your truth, to be creative, to share with others how you really feel, and you might develop health conditions in your throat too. So, you see how chakras are interconnected with the the body and how they are all also interconnected with one another.
Aura is your invisible protection field which weakens when your physical and emotional bodies are struggling. Working on the health of your Aura is important because it will protect you from negative external influences, such as hexes, black magic, and everything else that might be sent your way that is not for your highest good. Also, it will be easier for you to set boundaries and be focused on your truth when your aura is robust and healthy.
Your vibration determines your reality. If you are confident and abundant within, you will manifest all that externally too. If you have a lot of unhealed trauma it will be hard for you to maintain your vibration high.
Spiritual awakening can be a terrifying experience which is often a result of some sort of traumatic event or a series of traumatic events and paranormal experiences which eventually crack you open. Addressing those fears and healing the psyche will be an important component of improving your mental health. Spiritual awakening experience is highly misunderstood. On the one hand, it is an incredible pivotal and beautiful experience where you begin to remember who you are and see through the illusion of this world. On the other hand, it can be a terrifying experience because many of us go through it completely isolated from society, are misunderstood by it, and have no knowledge about this profound experience and how it may affect our psyche and our lives. If we had the right support, this process would have been so much easier for all of us.
Soul Dimension of Health/The Higher Self
Your soul or your SELF is a powerful energy which cannot be destroyed by atrocities of this world. Even if you have experienced a lot of trauma, your soul/SELF is still there untouched and very powerful. It could have moved further away from your body or even got partially fragmented due to traumatic events but nevertheless it is still there whole, complete, and waiting for your call. Your soul is your powerhouse that you need to reconnect with to be able to heal on all levels of your being. You need to remember who you are and what you came here to do. You need to remember that you are a part of Source having a human experience on Earth at this crazy time in history. You are so much more than the physical body.
Your Past lives along with your Future lives can hold different unresolved energies within your field which can impact your current life in negative ways. A classic example is when you were burnt at the stake in a past life and so in this life you developed eczema or another skin condition as a result of that. When you have tried everything to heal yourself and nothing has been helping, this is a sign that you might need to explore the quantum field to better understand your soul's journey and heal those perpetuating health issues.
Your Higher Self (HS) which is the entirety of your soul and who you are holds a lot of wisdom, information and healing which you can access on your own at any time. Unfortunately, we developed a lot of blocks hindering our connection with our souls and our HSs. For this reason, it might feel almost impossible for you to access the information/the treasure chest of your soul. If that's the case, you might benefit from working with a practitioner who can help you move past those blocks and re-establish a good connection with the entirety of who you are.
The guide above is short and simple. I will be writing more articles covering each component of it in more detail in near future. Also, I am planning to create a more extensive but still simple guide for you to easily utilise on your trauma healing journey.
Every health dimension I listed above is interconnected and they are constantly communicating with one another. They are fluid and constantly moving whether toward vibrant health or lack of thereof. Different life circumstances will impact each dimension of your health in their unique way and your role here is to recognise that and keep moving toward health and balance, ensuring homeostasis - not perfection. Sometimes, you will do it well, and sometimes - not so much, and it is absolutely okay.
Healing in the way you imagine it in your head is not guaranteed but it is possible. What I can guarantee you is that by addressing your cPTSD through each dimension of health you WILL experience positive changes within yourself, your triggers will decrease, you will become a stronger, more resilient, healthier, connected and happier adult. You will fall in love with yourself and you will see yourself through a more objective and loving lens. Your life will change too. It does require a little bit of your effort though. At the same time, sometimes it requires no effort at all but simply detaching yourself from the old trauma story and everything you know about yourself and opening up to possibility of being more than what you got used to believing.
If you are struggling and do not know where to begin your healing or how to proceed with it, you can book a session with me to forge your path forward. I'll be happy and honoured to support you on your trauma healing journey in a multidimensional way.
